Hancock Board Swears in New Student Trustee

JULY 20, 2020 -- The Allan Hancock College Board of Trustees proudly welcomed Ana Rosas Pacheco as its newest student trustee. Pacheco was formally sworn in by Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D., during the board’s regular meeting on July 14.

Pacheco is a Santa Maria native who graduated from Santa Maria High School before attending Hancock. She is currently majoring in administration of justice and plans to transfer to California State University, Fresno to pursue a four-year degree in criminal justice. Prior to being elected as student trustee in May, Pacheco served as the executive director for Hancock’s Associated Student Body Government (ASBG).

“As student trustee, I will work to make sure students are aware of the opportunities they have here at Hancock. I want to help students have their voices heard and I want them to feel like they have a say in their education, because they do,” said Pacheco. “We are all part of the same college and we are all here for a better future.”

Pacheco said she was inspired to get involved in ASBG and run for student trustee after witnessing the impact other student leaders had on the college. It motivated her to get involved with student government and be a voice for her fellow students. That responsibility is even more important as Hancock students like Pacheco continue to face the challenges on and off campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to tell students to not give up. We are almost there and we can do this,” said Pacheco. “I want them to know that ASBG is here for them and that they can always reach out to us. They are not alone. We are in this with them.”

The student trustee is a non-voting position that attends all board meetings and is recognized as a full member of the board. Student trustees are entitled to participate in discussions and receive all materials presented to trustees, except for items and materials presented in closed session. The term for each student trustee is one year.

Pacheco replaces Heidi Mendiola, who served a one-year term as student trustee and graduated from Hancock in May 2020. Pacheco was one of 13 students elected to the ASBG’s Board of Directors. Other newly elected students include ASBG President Fernando Gonzalez Orozco, Vice President Lennette Espinoza and Executive Director David Bautista Gonzalez, among others.
